Ubud Royal Cremation in Ubud on Wednesday August 18, 2011

If you are fortunate enough to be in Bali and especially Ubud on August 18,2011 then you will have the opportunity to witness a royal cremation for Ibu Anak Agung Niang Rai, the mother of prince Ubud who is also the Regent of Gianyar. A hefty word of warning, Get there early in the morning because you can guarantee that besides you and your numerous fellow travelers there will be accompanied literally by thousands of Balinese from all over the island coming to participate in this cremation and ceremony. At around 1 p.m. the ceremony began. The body of AA Niang Rai, was carried from the royal compound into the royal bade, a 24-meter-tall tower constructed from different woods and bamboo. The tower was elaborately decorated with gold papers and various figures from Balinese Hinduism's mythology. The 10-ton tower had 9 tiered roofs, signifying the elevated social status of the deceased.
The crowd lining up to the royal cemetery of Dalem Puri cheered when the gigantic sarcophagus of AA Niag Rai passed by. It was carried on the shoulders of some 400 men. Upon carrying the bade for 200 meters they will be replaced by a fresh group of 400 men. Overall, 1.500 men are tasked with transporting the cremation's giant structures.
As the sun set, the body of AA Niang Rai was surrendered to the blazing fire of purification. The sacred mantra uttered by some Hindu high priest implored the Almighty to take the soul of this respected prince back into His eternal embrace.

The 66th Year of Indonesian Independence

Date: August 17th, 2011
Independent since 1945, each year Indonesia celebrates the end of its struggle for freedom from the Dutch on August 17th
Indonesia attained independence from Holland in a long struggle during the 1940's. When the Japanese invaded Indonesia in February 1942 the Dutch were forced to flee, or be captured. After the war was over Indonesia made it Declaration of Independence on August 17th 1945, with Sukarno as the first President. The Dutch had other idea though and returned in March 1946. They fought in many famous skirmishes with the Balinese, including the massacre of Balinese hero Gusti Ngurah Rai, and managed to take back control of Bali. Nations around the world were not sympathetic to the Dutch position and in 1949 they withdrew to allow the formation of The Republic of Indonesia in 1950.
Throughout Bali, all the 'official' businesses & government institutions are closed and there are plenty of red and white flags to wave. Join in on the fun on August 17th 2011

The 5th Annual BaliSpirit Festival Early Bird Tickets and Accommodation Packages are now ONSALE!
The mission of the Annual BaliSpirit Festival, slated for March 28 – April 1, 2012, is to inspire individuals to create positive change in the world with a focus on giving back to Bali. The BaliSpirit Festival champions the collaborative power of yoga, dance and music to strengthen the ecological health & vitality of the island while maintaining the vibrancy of the Balinese people and their unique culture. Over the past four years, international yoga teachers have offered Karma Yoga programs throughout Indonesia, helping to raise over $55,000 for orphanages, clinics such as Bumi Sehat, and the Festival's own HIV/AIDS awareness program "Ayo Kits Bicara HIV/AIDS" and more. Some of this year's confirmed teachers include: Danny Paradise, Mark Whitwell, Vinn Marti, Twee Merrigan, Les Leventhal with more to come!
In addition, most of the musicians joining the line-up donate their time and resources to participate in the Festival. For example, in the spring of 2009, peace troubadour & internationally renowned musician Michael Franti gave a benefit concert in conjunction with BaliSpirit, raising over $17,000 for Bumi Sehat. In 2012 The BaliSpirit Festival will host its second annual FREE "HIV/AIDS awareness" concert for Balinese with visiting musicians as well.
For 2012, festival goers will be able to participate in greening Bali, as The Festival has teamed with the Environmental Bamboo Foundation to reforest the northern slopes Mount Agung, East Bali's most sacred Peak and home to the island's Mother Temple, Besakih, using the fastest-growing canopy on earth: Bamboo. Each Full Festival Pass holder will receive a Bamboo shoot as part of this project, helping to reforest one of Bali's poorest and arid regions.
