Restoring an Ecosystem - One Bamboo Shoot at a Time

Bali Bamboo

The northern slopes of Mount Agung, Bali’s most sacred peak and the home of the Hindu island’s mother temple, Besakih, lay barren after clear cutting and volcanic eruption have robbed them of their fertile forests. But the Environmental Bamboo Foundation (EBF) has a plan to re-green these abandoned hills. They are planting a forest, using the fastest-growing canopy on earth: Bamboo.

Located in central Java close to Yogyakarta, Borobodur is one of the most incredible places on earth. The holiness of this site is particularly apparent during this Buddhist ritual.

BaliSpirit is proud to announce that it will team with the Environmental Bamboo Foundation to reforest these degraded northern slopes of Mount Agung in Bali’s eastern region of Karangasem, starting with the BaliSpirit Festival in 2012.

The aim of the project is to strategically expand existing forest by planting adjacent fields with bamboo. Ten percent of each hectare of land will be planted to create shelterbelts that provide erosion control and watershed, sun, and wind protection. As the bamboo shoots grow into towering pillars, new grasses and other plant species will naturally germinate and thrive below.

The growing forests will help reverse desertification and re-green this sacred landscape. Bamboo is a highly valuable building material throughout Southeast Asia. In Bali, it serves a variety of purposes within Hindu ceremonies. Thanks to its fast growth rate, the bamboo forest can be harvested without depleting its supply. (Read More)

Ceremonies of The Month

Hari Raya Galungan (06 July 2011) & Kuningan (16 July 2011)

Galungan

is the day when the victory of Dharma or Justice/Truth wins over Adharma. It is when the family ancestors descend into the family temples, led there by seeing the long curved bamboo pole (penjor) that are erected in front of every Balinese house.

For ten days, the ancestors are feted in the family temples; many temple festivals occur at this time of year and there is great feasting. On the last day, Kuningan (16 July 2011), the ancestors are seen off with a flurry of yellow offerings and yellow rice.
