| Starseed Children Centre, Br.Penestanan Kaja Sayan, Ubud - Bali |
Starseed Children's Centre: A Steiner Kindergarten and Playgroup:
Our Centre is designed to respond to the developmental needs of 3 to 5 year old
children using the Steiner philosophy of teaching. All Children will turn 6 by the time they have finished Kindergarten.
The key elements in the program are:
- Regular daily rhythms. Predictability and repetition are profoundly
soothing to children. For this reason life in our centre follows a
predictable rhythm. Holidays like Halloween and Christmas are celebrated
with stories, songs, and art.
- Learning through imitation. Young children before the age of seven
learn
primarily by trying things out, using their bodies, and imitating the adults
around them. Our Centre responds to these drives by focusing on practical
activities, such as baking, painting, gardening, and craft work.
- Art. Art is a vital part of the Steiner curriculum from the very
beginning. In our centre, the children paint with water colours in the three
primary colors, red, yellow, and blue, to learn the basic relationships
between the colours. They model with clay and draw with crayons.
- Singing, movement, and storytelling in groups. During daily circle
time, the children sing, do finger plays, recite poems, and do movement exercises.
- Free play, both indoors and outdoors. According to David Elkind,
author
of The Power of Play [Da Capo Press, 2006], imaginative play is the catalyst
for social, physical, emotional, and moral development in young children.
Play based on the children's own spontaneous ideas is one of our primary
activities. The simple, open-ended toys in the classroom lend themselves to
that kind of play. A piece of driftwood can become a car one minute, and a
house the next. Often children will act out the fairy tales they hear during
story time.
What else will you find at Starseed Children's Centre?
- Everything in the classroom is made of natural materials – wood,
stone, metal, cotton, silk and wool.
- Steiner educators believe that computers have no place in the
three-dimensional, sensory, and open-ended classroom appropriate for the
young child.
- Reading at home is encouraged – and some children do begin to read –
but
it is not taught in the classroom. There are two reasons for this. One is
that many children at 5 or 6 have not developed the fine motor tracking or
intellectual focus needed to be successful readers. Steiner educators
believe that early academics take the child's energy away from his or her
real developmental task, which is learning through play.

| Bali International School |
Located in Sanur, this Bali School is the oldest and most prestigious
international school in Bali. BIS was started by parents in 1986. It is a
co-educational, private, nonprofit school; serving students pre-school to grade
12. The school is governed by a Board of Directors elected annually by the
parents and lead by the Director. An Assistant Administrator for PS-grade 8 and
a High School Academic Coordinator assist the Director. All teachers are fully
qualified and experienced in international education.
BIS is accredited Preschool through grade 12 by the Western Association of
Schools and Colleges and is authorized by the International Baccalaureate
Organization for the IB Diploma Program, grades 11 to 12, and the IB Middle
Years Program, grades 6-10. At the end of grade 12 students who have achieved
the graduation requirements will receive a BIS Diploma. |
| School Governance and Organization |
The governing body of the school is an elected Board of Directors (7-9 members)
who are committed to the well-being of the school and its value in Bali. The
Board has four main areas of responsibility:
- to decide the school's strategy for improvement so that students are provided
the optimum opportunity to learn and achieve,
- to provide the Director with support, advice and information, drawing on its
member's knowledge and experience,
- to ensure the school's financial well being and viability, and
- to ensure the highest quality of education is provided.
The Board utilizes a committee structure to facilitate input from parents and
faculty with relevant expertise in reviewing and developing school policy. A
representative from the Parents, Teachers, and Friends Association (PTA) and
the school faculty sit on the board as non-voting representatives. Board
meetings are held on a monthly basis and an Annual General Meeting is in the
first term of the Bali International School calendar year. Meeting times are
announced and anyone may attend.
The Faculty of the School consists of professionally qualified teachers from:
Australia, Canada, Indonesia, France, United Kingdom, United States and New
Zealand. One of the benefits for children is to have experience in learning
from a diverse group of teachers as well as learning, playing and working with
fellow students from all parts of our global community. A group of dedicated
support staff helps make the entire Bali International School operation run
smoothly.
|
| Accreditation |
Bali International School is accredited to grade 12 by WASC (Western
Association of Schools and Colleges). During the 2001/2002 school year, the
school was involved in a self study for the purpose of fulfilling the
requirements of the accrediting agency. The accreditation process is a
voluntary process whereby a school conducts a self-study that serves as a basis
for a review by a team of international educators. The team members assist the
school in appraising their instructional program. The school is evaluated on
(1) the degree to which there is clarity of purpose that is reflected through
the school's leadership, instructional program, policies, and use of time and
resources: and (2) how adequately the WASC criteria are being met. The maximum
term of accreditation is six years.
