History of the Balispirit Festival

balispirit festival

The Balispirit Festival was conceived through a creative collaboration by our three Co- Founders, each one bringing a unique perspective to the formation of the Festival. The Balispirit Festival was founded in March 2008 based on their vision of creating a community event that would bring people together from all over the world to participate in creative collaborations and performances in yoga, music and dance.

All three co-founders strongly believe that creative collaborations have a big impact on outreach for youth. This is clearly evident through the formation of the Bhinneka Initiative. The Festival also seeks to create an environmentally conscious event: one which will inspire on-going responsibility to the environment through Festival activities especially on the Free Family Day (Hari Cinta Keluarga).

Meghan Pappenheim

Meghan would like many people to experience the immense beauty and serenity all yogis enjoy when they come to Ubud. It is her belief that teachings through Balispirit are meant to be shared with the collective, so that everyone can actively participate and 'give back' to the community.

I Made Gunarta

Made Gunarta strongly believes in the preservation of a wide variety of Balinese creative forms. His vision is to showcase and share the true essence of Balinese culture with a wider audience in order to positively impact the consciousness of people throughout the world.

Robert Weber

Robert is creating a platform for conscious performers to gather and share their unique forms of music with a new audience from Bali and South East Asia. A producer and musician, Robert has a deep understanding about how music can have a profound and lasting effect on many people's lives.

How the Festival has evolved since 2008…

The Festival has grown from a four-day Festival to a six-day celebration, which means there will be even more exciting workshops and performances by international and local artists. Acclaimed Yogis and outstanding performers from Ghana, Guinea, Uganda, USA, Canada, Mexico, UK, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, India, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and throughout the Indonesian archipelago will be participating throughout the six days.

The Festival grounds have also expanded thanks to the kind support of our Festival Patron, Purnati Center for the Arts. With the addition of a 1400sqm lawn that will serve as the main venue for the Festival Night performances and Dharma Fair, there is also an attractive outdoor amphitheater, a beautiful two-storey floating pavilion with a 240sqm yoga space on the 2nd floor overlooking lush tropical greenery, a 148sqm swimming pool, and expansive lawns that are perfect for yoga and dance workshops during the Festival.

In addition, the outreach drive of Balispirit Festival 2008 has taken root this year through the official inception of the Bhinneka Initiative. The dream of our founders has been to inspire positive change in our Indonesian youth through introducing yoga principles that enhance daily life and creative collaborations in dance and music.
