Desa Seni’s Yogathon for Charity - The First of its Kind in Bali

Desa Seni’s Yogathon for Charity

On Saturday 19th March The BaliSpirit Festival proudly joined forces with Desa Seni as over 300 people gathered at the Village Resort to support, participate, laugh and play their way through twelve hours of yoga and dance. Beginning at 8am with an opening Pranayama and Prana Flow by the Yoga Barn’s Donna Rossiter and international yoga teacher Twee Merrigan, the action continued until the sun set and the full moon was celebrated with live music and a closing ceremony.

Tom Talucci, Co-Owner of Desa Seni resort said, "It is awe inspiring to me how we can all come together from all over the world and support, contribute to each other's development and growth. The most important thing is how we can do it! We are strong, in force and alive."

The event raised $14,000 USD for AYO! Kita Bicara HIV/AIDS, the Festival’s official outreach initiative, that was created by the BaliSpirit Festival team during in 2010 with the support of DKT Indonesia. This program, Ayo! Kita Bicara HIV/AIDS (Come on! Let’s Talk About HIV/AIDS), has already successfully impacted hundreds of Balinese school-aged kids in Gianyar regency and is set to expand thanks to the hard work of the Desa Seni team.

Through all of its many diverse elements and gifts, the Festival’s focus remained true to its founding goals of awakening and nourishing each individual's potential for positive change within; to inspire positive change in homes and communities around the world. This year’s Festival attracted people from all ages and walks of life: promoting cultural diversity, creative expression, collaboration, conscious action, entertainment, and friendship across borders.

Festival Co-Founder and Producer, Meghan Pappenheim, underscored these goals in her comments at a press event, noting that her primary motivation has always been to help restore a sense of joy in people’s lives and encourage self-belief.

“Within all the chaos and disaster, I want to give us the opportunity to just "be"; to awaken to love, silence, expansion. Then we can go back into life and hopefully have an awareness about changing,” Pappenheim said, “At this festival, we drop little hints that you can make a change in this world just by being you".

A Yogini's Prayer Inspired

Pujiyastuti Sindhu, from Yoga Leaf Studio in Bandung, Java, has been deeply moved by the Festival this year, so she has offered up the following prayer of gratitude, which she drafted in response to the “Yoga of Giving” panel and ceremony’s spirit of intercultural and interfaith unity:

Gratitude (By Pujiyastuti Sindhu)

I’m Grateful-- God fills all I need and all that is needed by my family,
I’m Grateful-- God gives me abundant opportunities to share his light with the people around me,
I’m Grateful-- God becomes my center; guiding me when I am the center to guide the people around me
I’m Grateful-- God determines my life and forgives me, if I am guilty or afraid
I’m Grateful-- To be able to forget and to forgive the people from my past
I’m grateful-- To realize God is behind everything that has happened and will happen
I’m Grateful-- God is the peace that fills my life and my family’s
I’m Grateful-- To realize God is behind everything that has happened and will happen today
I’m Grateful-- God is there wherever I step my foot today
I’m Grateful-- Wherever I go, I’m headed towards Him
I thank myself for being here, I thank God for being here
My God (You can whisper the name of your personal God if you like) please make me always feel satisfied, whole, and complete.

Happy Hari Raya Saraswati! A Day to Celebrate the Goddess of learning, science and literature in Bali.

Happy Hari Raya Saraswati

Saturday April 23, 2011 (today!)

In accordance with Balinese Hindu belief, knowledge is an essential medium to achieve the goal of life as a human being. This day celebrates Saraswati in Bali, a special day devoted to the Goddess of learning, science and literature. Saraswati rules the intellectual and creative realm, and is the patron saint of libraries and schools. For Balinese Hindus, she is celebrated as she succeeded in taming the wandering and lustful mind of her consort, Brahma, who was preoccupied with the goddess of material existence, Shatarupa. On this day no one is allowed to read or write, and offerings are made to the lontar (palm-leaf scripts), books and shrines.

Saraswati Day is celebrated every 210-days on Saniscara Umanis Wuku Watugunung and marks the start of the new year according to the Balinese Pawukon calendar. Ceremonies and prayers are held at the temples in family compounds, villages and businesses from morning to noon. Prayers are also held in school temples. Teachers and students abandon their uniforms for the day in place of bright and colourful ceremony gear, filling the island with colour! Children bring fruit and traditional cakes to school for offerings at the temple.
