Internationally acclaimed musician Michael Franti and
Indonesia's favorite singer Oppie Andaresta kicked off the
first annual Bali Spirit Festival in mid March, with an
uplifting charity concert & dinner. The beachside restaurant Gado-Gado was
packed with more than 400 people who came for both the inspiring music and to
help raise money for expanded healthcare facilities at Bali's Bumi Sehat
Birthing & Health Clinic in Ubud. Over US$ 18,000, 75% of ticket
sales, was donated to Bumi Sehat. This is an all time record for a
charitable event in Bali.
Everyone's spirits stayed high with follow up Laughter Yoga workshops
at the Villas Seminyak, with India's own Madan Kataria, better known as the
Guru of Giggling. The main 4-day festival was held
at The Bali Purnati Center for the Arts in Batuan, just outside of Ubud. It was
here that over 500 Festival goers were treated to a vast array
of food stalls, daily workshops like Balinese & West African Dance,
Capoeira, Kung Fu, Poi, Belly Dancing, different varieties of Yoga and more. In
the evenings there were some stellar performances by international artists
including Cudamani – a world renowned Balinese Dance & Gamelan
Ensemble, Mystic Beats from Australia, and Tina Malia, an American singer who
infuses her sacred acoustic music with many spiritual traditions.
The final day of the Festival was open to families with free programming for
kids both Balinese & foreign - this day was a great inspiration to
all.
Balispirit is a true celebration of yoga, dance, music, love &
gratitude that is sure to be even more amazing in future festivals to
come!
