Uluwatu Temple

The Uluwatu Temple, also known as Pura Luhur Uluwatu, is one of six key temples believed to be Bali's spiritual pillars. The temple is a must-do while in Bali. Built on the edge of a steep cliff approximately 70 meters above sea level with breathtaking views over the ocean with its majestic waves especially during sunsets. The Hindu Trinity: Brahma, Vishnu, and Siva, are believed to melt together there. As a result the Uluwatu Temple is a place of worship of Siva Rudra, the Balinese Hindu deity of all elements and aspects of life in the universe and is also dedicated to protecting Bali from evil sea spirits. The surroundings of the temple area are home to hundreds of macaques that are believed to guard the temple against negative influences. Be aware that these monkeys are highly attracted in grabbing your belongings, like sunglasses and cameras on their search for food. Visitors must wear a sarong and a sash which can be hired at the temple entrance. Visit just before sunset when the famous Kecak dance is performed every day from 6pm and usually last one hour.
